DID YOU KNOW that gender bias in LOR has actually been studied in a variety of specialties in academic medicine? women are more likely to be described by their communal characteristics and men by their accomplishments/potential to accomplish. one study even looked at the outcome of gendered language on application success, noting a higher residency match rate for men. there are obviously many types of implicit bias, but specifically for gender bias in LOR, some tools have been developed to help neutralize language and reduce this to give everyone a fair chance. advocate for yourself and make sure your mentors know that resources like this are available!
