Women, especially younger women, are undertreated for high cholesterol, even when medication is appropriate, they’re less likely to be prescribed it and less likely to hit their LDL goals.
The new ACC/AHA 2026 cholesterol guidelines finally address this. They also now recognize risk factors unique to women:
→ Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (preeclampsia, gestational hypertension)
→ Gestational diabetes
→ Early menopause (45 years old), especially premature menopause (40 years old)
→ Preterm delivery (before 37 weeks gestation)
→ Small-for-gestational age (birthweight below the 10th percentile)
→ Recurrent spontaneous pregnancy loss
These are all independent risk factors for heart disease outside of known cardiovascular risk factors (DM2, HTN, smoking, etc)
Women’s have different CVD risks that are s3x-specific to us. Our care should be just as specific too.
Please share.🩷
Every woman deserves to know this.
