Happy Dominican Independence Day 🇩🇴. I remember growing up being so insecure about my hair, I heard the term “pelo malo” ( bad hair ) so much! I was 6 when my mom first relaxed my hair, I envied my cousin’s naturally straight hair, I started becoming insecure about my looks at such a young age and it all stemmed from my hair. When your entire culture tells you the way your hair looks is ugly you start to internalize that. After years of relaxing and frying my hair with straighteners I finally decided to not do it anymore. I had to learn on my own how to style and love my hair while drowning out my family’s “friendly” laughs and them saying “pero y ese pajon”. I take every chance I get to educate my aunts and uncles about my curls and it’s paid off.
