Listen pookie, one thing society will do is call you selfish when you said you need sleep. They’ll call you selfish when you hire help. They’ll call you selfish when you go to the gym, take the girls’ trip, keep your career, order the takeout, or lock the bathroom door for ten whole minutes of silence.
Selfish. For doing the bare minimum to stay human. Here is what nobody tells you before you become a mother: the world will shrink your needs down to nothing and then applaud you for disappearing. It will celebrate your exhaustion like it is a virtue. It will call your depletion “sacrifice” and your burnout “dedication” and your silence “strength.” And slowly, without realizing it, you will start to believe that wanting things for yourself is wrong(which is wild!!).
A mother who is running on empty is not a better mother. She is a resentful one. A disconnected one.
