To be clear, I’m not talking about extreme or ab*sive situations. I’m talking about the typical strict household where “because I said so” was the final answer. At some point, you have to decide if you’re going to keep living by rules that made sense when you were 14… or start setting standards for your adult life. If you don’t practice standing up for yourself, even in small ways, you can end up enabling the same control you say frustrates you. And that doesn’t mean you don’t love or respect your parents…It just means you’re growing up. Here is what helped me navigate this in my own life… 1. Notice where you’re choosing silence just to avoid tension. 2. Start with small boundaries, not dramatic rebellions. 3. Communicate calmly instead of defensively. 4. Get financially and emotionally independent where you can. 5. Accept that disappointment is sometimes the cost of autonomy.
