You’ve probably heard this advice a million times…
“Get Security+ if you want to start a career in cybersecurity.”
But… is that still valid in 2025?
As someone who actually has Security+ (and didn’t get it as my first cert), I have thoughts. 👀
When I got my Security+ in South Africa, I was already in my second cyber job. It was a nice to have for foundational knowledge…but honestly? What moved the needle in my career were vendor-based certs, hands-on skills, and actually doing the work.
Here’s the thing:
✅ Security+ is still relevant… especially in the US, where it’s DoD-approved.
🌍 But outside the US? It really depends on your goals.
If you’re targeting cloud, IAM, SOC, offensive security or governance, you might benefit more from a cert that’s specific to that lane, after getting some experience and direction.
In 2025, what truly matters is proof of skill:
Projects, labs, networking, and aligning with your dream role.
