First up guess who bought rough sawn timber and not planed? (It was me). I think I presumed because it was structural and not on show rough would be ok. Lo and behold I need a flat surface to adhere the cleat to the board as I am relying on wood glue to hold them up - I don't think the planks are thick enough for screws. And also I need to run them through the table saw and being wonky will not give a good straight cut. My friend's plane came in handy, all I had to do was take a mm or two off each bit? Wrong. The plane was previously lent to someone who dropped it ... The blade was very blunt and damaged and the frog (blade mount) was also slightly wonky.
