Part 2 - I constructed the second board like in part 1. I tested a lot of stains and eventually picked one to match as close to the originals as possible, with the help of Chris at
@osmo_uk . I needed one with a yellow-y colour to compliment the existing boards, so we went with Light Oak. I did one coat of wood wax and 4 coats of polyurethane - gloss by
@rustinsltd for a super shiny finish. I had to bring them inside because it was too cold to dry outside!
As for sanding, Barry at
@ebraisives did send me some replacement discs (thanks!) as he did mention some issues with older batches. These did perform better. But, I think the mesh P60 discs just have the problem of being such high friction - they really do take a lot of material off quickly - and have the smallest surface area of sticking to the sander (big mesh, big holes), that anything but flat even operation can cause them to lose stickiness.
