I’ve never been very good at rules. Principles, though… I trust those. When I light a landscape, I’m not trying to describe reality. I’m staging it. Theatre lighting. Spotlights. Pools of attention. The land becomes a set and the story decides where the light goes. Rules say “the sun wouldn’t do that.” Principles say “does this help the story?” I learned this way of thinking from the Canadian painters in the Group of Seven. They bent light shamelessly. Entire forests would glow, shores would spotlight themselves, skies would cooperate emotionally rather than meteorologically. And the work is better for it. Light is permission. Light is focus. Light is narrative. Ignore rules. Stand on principles.
