Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, says the company made an early decision to focus on enterprise AI instead of consumer AI. Not because consumer AI isn’t powerful. But because business incentives matter. When your model depends on: • ads • maximizing engagement • competing for billions of free users It becomes very hard not to optimize for attention. And attention doesn’t always equal value. Anthropic chose to sell AI directly to businesses — where the product has to deliver measurable outcomes, not just screen time. This raises a bigger question in the AI industry: Is AI alignment only a technical challenge — Or is it also an economic one?
