They don’t tell you that dementia is⬇️: Scrapes on your body from trying to protect them, and yourself during a confused outburst. Them talking to the mirror because they think it’s someone else in the room. Waking up to them packing a bag at 3AM saying they’re “late for work”… when they retired 5+ years ago. Having to gently hold them back as they swing, scream, sob because psychosis doesn’t knock before it enters. And then a minute later, it’s gone. And you’re left there… shaking, crying, trying to hold it together. People think it’s just forgetting names. But it’s also forgetting who they are. And sometimes, who you are. And still, you show up. Still, you give grace. Still, you find moments of love buried inside the chaos.
