This is St. Luke Medical Center, an Art Deco giant completed in 1933 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, a congregation of nuns whose roots stretch all the way back to the 17th century. For most of the 20th century, St. Luke’s proudly served the Pasadena community, until advances at neighboring hospitals slowly made it obsolete. Caltech once considered taking it over as a research facility, but by then the interior was too far gone. Today, it sits empty—equal parts architectural masterpiece and haunting reminder of what once was.
