Reposting this one from 2023 because we’ve added about 30,000 of you since then—and this place deserves another moment. Is this Pasadena’s most magnificent abandoned building? I still think it just might be. This is St. Luke Medical Center, an Art Deco giant completed in 1933 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, a congregation of nuns whose roots stretch all the way back to the 17th century. For most of the 20th century, St. Luke’s proudly served the Pasadena community, until advances at neighboring hospitals slowly made it obsolete. Caltech once considered taking it over as a research facility, but by then the interior was too far gone. Today, it sits empty—equal parts architectural masterpiece and haunting reminder of what once was. And if it looks familiar, that’s because Hollywood agrees: this building has also lived a second life as a popular filming location, standing in for everything from hospitals to dystopian institutions on screen in movies like “La La Land” and “Hallo...
