Before Black History Month is over, let me tell you about a place California history creators tend to ignore - California’s first town that was created, financed, and governed entirely by African Americans. 📍Welcome to Allensworth, CA. Established in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth, a man so impressive it’s actually hard to sum up everything he did. Born into slavery in Louisville, KY, he would eventually escape to freedom by way of the Union Army, where he would eventually rise to the highest rank ever held by an African American. Instead of settling with his family in Los Angeles and accepting the ongoing racism and housing issues, he decided to think boldly and create something the first of its kind in California. Deep in the harsh Central Valley sun rose the town of Allensworth. A place where people could be safe, find community, and economic equality.
