More haunting moments inside the historic Cork City Gaol….⛓️🗝️
Built in the early 19th century, this Gaol was quite the step up from the previous overcrowded and unsanitary prison but it was not without its own problems.
As always it would face overcrowding, hard punishment, an inmate population ranging from 7 years old to 80+, with crimes being as innocent as stealing bread to as nefarious as murder.
Many of the inmates would be shipped off to Australia, never to return to Irish shores again. It’s a landmark steeped in fear and pain and leaves all who visit with a lingering sadness.
I truly believe to understand the history & hardships of the Irish people, it is necessary to visit their historic prisons. I highly recommend a visit whilst in Cork. 🇮🇪
