One of my favorite historic buildings in Pasadena is maybe not one you would expect from the outside, but the legacy of the abandoned YWCA building that sits in the shadow of City Hall is one that will forever remain special…. All thanks to Julia Morgan. Julia’s accolades and designs are enormous, with over 700+ buildings under her belt, and having the honor of being California’s first female licensed architect, there is a lot to love about her. But oddly, this is the only building she ever designed in Pasadena. Thankfully, it’s statewide and national designation as a historic landmark (and being owned by the city) ensures its legacy; what will become of the building is still up in the air. Budgets and plans have fallen through and been turned down for a conversion to a hotel time and time again, so while the city figures out what to do with it, this beauty, once full of life, sits empty.
