Iggy Pop once said, “Punk rock is a conversation with society, often it’s an argument.” At @924gilmanstreet, they’ve been providing a space for that argument since 1986. Welcome back to my series, Sounds of LA….and to tell this story, we had to head north….way north. In fact, this venue isn’t in LA at all, but rather Berkeley, but to tell the story of Punk Rock in LA, we had to tell the story of the venue that is keeping the spirit and the genre alive for all of California. Did I selfishly want to visit this place because I am die die-hard @greenday and @billiejoearmstrong….yes, but I won’t apologize. If you want to learn more about this historic and groundbreaking venue, I highly encourage you to watch the 2017 documentary, “Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk” ( @eastbaypunk ) by @corbettredford - it provided a ton of information for this mini deep dive, and I am so inspired by how fantastic this doc was.
