As a historian who specializes in the Victorian age, I live for uncovering hidden gems like this, so you can imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon a compound of Victorian homes tucked away in Garvanza, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Northeast Los Angeles. Once named for the garbanzo fields that stretched across Rancho San Rafael’s 36,000 acres, Garvanza became a haven for artists, bohemians, and civic leaders. Among them was this home, now lovingly restored to its 1886 grandeur. By 1899, Garvanza was annexed by Los Angeles, and though it was home to renowned stained-glass artist William Lees Judson, it quickly slipped into the shadow of its larger neighbors.
