While the storming of the Bastille gets all the fanfare, it was the Conciergerie where the true reckoning played out. Once a royal palace, it became the Revolution’s conveyor belt of death—thousands condemned in a fever of liberty and vengeance. What once began as an exciting rebirth became a never-ending succession of bloodshed, fear, and torment. Today, the Conciergerie is a stunning museum—beautiful in that uniquely Parisian way, yet utterly heartbreaking. The memorial room with its walls etched with names of those guillotined during the Reign of Terror is enough to make you pause and question humanity altogether.
