I can only imagine how much Pilar would have loved his nieces and nephews, and I can only dream of how much our children would have adored their Uncle Pils! As we celebrate his life today, I’m present to the way his spirit has carried on through my brothers and me, and now our children - especially our sons who each carry his name. May 26 has taken on so much more meaning than we could have ever imagined; not only the deep, immeasurable pain of losing him, but also the incredible love and connection we have experienced being in communion with one another and the families of each of the boys whose lives were lost on this day, 16 years ago. We all experience grief differently but the common ground we come back to every year on this day in acknowledgment of their spirits demonstrates the immense ripple that a collective loss can have, reminding us that on the other side of pain, is deep, immeasurable love.
