Some more of my favourite things from the Melbourne Garden Show. All of the display gardens were amazing and I picked up a lot of ideas for what works aesthetically. Some of the design principles I like are when: 1. the designers plant in groups of odd numbers. This makes the space feel more natural and less symmetrical (some people prefer symmetry but gardens should be “tamed wilderness” IMO) 2. Plant smaller ground covers closer to where you’d be viewing the garden (I.e. close to a pathway) then small bushes and then finally bigger trees at the back to get a layering effect that’s much easier on the eyes. 3. Always plant with growth habits in mind. You can plant a garden that will look beautiful now but after a summer of growth some of your plants will start to grow over each other. You need to space things apart and think longer term. This is especially the case for bigger trees which will eventually shade the rest of the garden.
