Spring is the best time to remind my students that the natural world always offers us what we need. And in this case, some of the best medicine might show up clinging to your pant leg.
Cleavers is one of those wild spring greens that teaches us: the weediest plants are sometimes the most powerful healers.
You’ll find it trailing along forest edges, lawns, garden beds, or fences—long, clingy stems with tiny hairs and starburst whorls of leaves. It sticks to everything, including you.
But it’s more than a weed. Cleavers is a gentle lymphatic tonic. If you’re dealing with puffy glands, fluid retention after flying, or breast tenderness around your cycle, cleavers helps clear that internal congestion.
Use it fresh: chop a handful and steep it in cool water overnight for a simple daily infusion, or tincture it right away to preserve its potency.
It tastes green and fresh—like cucumber skins and spring rain.
Harvest the top few inches before it flowers, and next time it grabs your sock...
