“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you,” Anne Lamott For the next two weeks, I’m heading to the Mentawai Islands—a remote chain off the coast of Sumatra known for fast, glassy waves and some of the most consistent reef breaks in the world— to unplug. Our trip is a chance to also step into a culture where body, land, and spirit are deeply connected. The Indigenous Mentawai people are known for their hand-tap tattoos with soot and sugarcane—each mark a sacred symbol of identity and relationship to the forest. Their shamans, or sikerei, are skilled plant healers. One of their most revered plants, sagunggubat (Dracaena angustifolia), is used in healing dances—its long leaves brushed over the body to “tie” harmony between self and forest. While I’m gone, I’m going to take a break from instagram, but I can’t wait to catch up with all of you when we return. Until then: happy spring 💚🌿 #MentawaiIslands #SurfAndSoul #RestIsMedicine #PlantWis...
