Time to put my shoes out in anticipation of Saint Nicholas’ arrival. I grew up in Bucharest, Romania celebrating the tradition of St. Nicholas Day on December 6-th. To this day, people know St. Nicholas by the name Santa Claus 🎅🏻. The real man behind the fictional modern Santa Claus was St. Nicholas of Myra, an early Christian Bishop. Born in 280 AD in Asia Minor, during the time of the Roman Empire. He lost his parents at an early age, though they left him great wealth when they died. He was known for giving anonymous gifts to help those in need. He was also known as “Nicholas the Wonderworker”. The feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated in various countries including Romania, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Portugal. We leave our shoes (or boots) in the hallways on the evening of December 5-th for St. Nicholas’ arrival on the morning of December 6-th. He arrives and gives children small gifts, chocolates, healthy treats and oranges. Happy winter holidays! ...
