To honor the last day of #hispanicheritagemonth , I want to celebrate all the Latina mamas breaking barriers in our culture around breastfeeding. As a latina, this journey has meant so much to me. It’s a reminder that I’ve faced many barriers on this journey, while acknowledging the privilege I have in many ways. This journey has taught me so much about my culture, and the women in my family. For many of them, breastfeeding was impossible. From language barriers, socioeconomic factors, shame, and their inability to stay home kept them from their journey. About 77-83% of Latina mothers beginning their breastfeeding journey but only 17% of them continue past six months. Breastfeeding is ingrained in our Hispanic culture and yet, in the US we see a huge shift in norms and mindset. From women’s breast being overly sexualized, to lack of accommodations for breastfeeding moms in work spaces, to not having bilingual lactation support in hospital settings.
