“I captured these photos flying over Ivanpah Solar Power plant in California, the world’s largest concentrated solar thermal plant. Located less than an hour southwest of Las Vegas, it uses 173,500 mirrors spread across five square miles to concentrate the sun's rays on three steam boilers which power electric turbines. The plant produces about 380 megawatts, or enough power for 140,000 homes.
.
While Ivanpah is part of a trend in which worldwide solar power capacity tripled between 2012 to 2016, the global share of renewable energy is only 17.5%. Pressuring our utilities to use more renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, instead of fossil fuels like oil and coal, will make a significant impact on providing a healthy climate for future generations to inherit and live in.”
