The vast majority of air pollution is sourced from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. When fossil fuels are burned, they not only releases carbon dioxide - the primary gas that contributes to climate change - they also release deadly particles that are, according to @WHO, responsible for millions of deaths worldwide each year.
