Without a doubt, the most difficult part, as has been echoed by friends and colleagues all over social media over the years, is not the technical aspects of complicated and high-risk traumas, it is the HUMAN aspect. The aspect of treating SOMEONE, not something.
It is having to change your bloody scrubs before you go talk/treat your next patient or return to the patients you handed off quickly in order to attempt and save the next patients life.
It is that moment you stand there as the doctor states, “does anyone else in the room have any other suggestions,” before calling the time of death and hoping you can come up with one thing that has not been attempted, before realizing there is nothing else to try.
It is having to witness the families pain and grief after being informed their son/daughter is dead.
It is that moment of sudden guilt/...
