We visited Makoko to see what is going on there after all the recent news. As a recap, in December, the Lagos State Government began demolishing homes in the Makoko community. The initial pretext was that they had built too close to high voltage power lines and needed a 100 meter buffer for safety but demolitions extended well beyond that buffer up to 500 meters away. Makoko is a poor fishing community on the Lagos lagoon whose residents have been living there ~100 years. The good news is the demolitions have stopped and the government has promised to compensate those who lost their homes after a lot of international attention on the community. Ultimately it will remain to be seen how much compensation is actually given. Unfortunately the place is badly destroyed. So many people lost their homes. Schools and even churches demolished.
