When US aid was cut earlier this year, a Somali maternity hospital shut down, staff were laid off, and doors were locked. But one night, a woman in late labour arrived, unaware of the closure. She gave birth outside the gate. The staff came running. Shocked and heartbroken, they returned to work at the hospital. And they’ve been working ever since—without pay.
