Let’s not talk about how U.S. businesses love to act like nobody should ever need to take any kind of medical leave!
Because in reality, you or a loved one *will* need to step away at one point for a medical issue, so it is *really* important to understand your options!
In order to qualify for FMLA - you do need to meet these requirements:
- You must work for a private-sector employer with 50 or more employees, a public agency, or a public/private elementary or secondary school.
- You need to have worked for your employer for at least 12 months (these months don’t have to be consecutive).
- You must have worked at least 1,250 hours during the 12 months before your leave starts.
Companies are allowed a decent amount of flexibility in FMLA rules, so be sure to check in with your employer on their exact policies.
