Studies are showing that the top modality to support those in depression is through moving the body in dance.
A form of somatic movement, dance engages the brain in an energetic release of emotions or energy stored in the body. Dance supports individuals in releasing old stories & blockages through bi-lateral movement that competes with therapies like EMDR as powerful tools in co-regulating the brain and nervous system.
I had the opportunity this year to work with dance students after a 25 year hiatus from dancing.
The primary ages I taught were the 7-9 and 10-14 year olds. I had the opportunity to choreograph and work with two amazing groups on two different dances this year, one focused on mental health and IFS parts work, and another on strength & revolution.
The first dance in February was choreographed to Vivaldi’s Winter, the second in our spring recital to Les Miserables, One Day More.
