‘Messiah of Evil’ (1973) began as a very loose reworking of Lovecraft’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” but strips away most explicit mythos in favor of mood, paranoia, and dream logic. The result is less a traditional horror story and more an eerie, slow-moving nightmare about a town quietly slipping into madness.
The film was directed by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, who later co-wrote American Graffiti and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Messiah of Evil stands out as their most experimental and surreal project, far removed from their later mainstream success.
