Once Upon a Time in America was heavily altered by Warner Bros. after Sergio Leone delivered his intended 229-minute, non-linear cut. Fearing American audiences wouldn’t sit through it, the studio cut the film down to 139 minutes and rearranged it into chronological order without Leone’s approval, completely undermining its themes of memory, regret, and time. The U.S. release in 1984 was a critical and commercial disaster, deeply upsetting Leone, who saw the film as his life’s work. After his death, longer restored versions were released and the film was reevaluated, eventually earning recognition as one of the great American epics—its reputation saved decades too late. 🎥 ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ (1984) #OnceUponATimeInAmerica #SergioLeone #FilmReels #MovieReview #Cinema
