‘Loving Vincent’ (2017) is the first fully oil-painted feature film ever released theatrically, composed of over 65,000 hand-painted frames created by more than 100 artists trained to replicate Van Gogh’s style. Each scene was first filmed in live-action and then painted over frame by frame at 12 frames per second, resulting in a fluid yet distinctly textured visual style. Every major character in the film is based on an actual Van Gogh portrait, grounding the story directly in his artwork.
