Fannie Lou Hamer believed that true freedom starts with access—to voting, to land, to food. Born into a family of sharecroppers, she knew firsthand how poverty and systemic injustice kept Black communities from thriving. So she fought back. She co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to challenge voter suppression, but her work didn’t stop at the ballot box. She launched the Freedom Farm Cooperative, securing land for Black families to grow their own food and build self-sufficiency. She even started a “pig bank” to help feed families in need. “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” Her words still push us forward. Her mission—feeding and uplifting communities—lives on.
