Were the deer or my boys more polite?🦌
Visiting Nara was at the very top of our older son’s Japan wishlist. One of his middle school teacher’s shared how unforgettable it was and the moment I started planning our Japan trip, he kept asking if we could go here.
A short train ride from Kyoto (tip: get off at Kintetsu Nara Station—it’s closer!) brought us straight into Nara Park, where deer are literally everywhere.
Some were shy and very polite—bowing for crackers and patiently waiting. And while it’s not part of the tradition, our kids bowed back and said thank you 🙏 . A few deer were a little less polite and got a bit frisky for snacks 😅 Just like kids, not every one is perfectly behaved.
The deer here are considered sacred, believed to be messengers of the gods, and have been protected for over 1,000 years. This was an experience the boys will cherish forever 💛
