DESERT X opens today, in the Coachella Valley. Since the beginning of my practice, I have been drawn to the fundamental act of positioning—to the placing of objects within space, and the testing of limits of gravity and equilibrium. At its core, sculpture is about positioning, about the negotiation of mass and void, its tension and release. The simple yet profound act of moving a stone, relocating it within space, and placing it with purpose, among the earliest and most enduring human gestures, was established long before sculpture was defined as an art form. The history of megalithic structures , like those at Castlerigg, Stonehenge, and Carnac, resonate deeply with me. We do not know exactly why such formations were created and what they were used for, but it is precisely because of their enigmatic nature that their powerful presence remains undeniable.
