The difference between an annotated bibliography and a literature review is that an annotated bibliography summarises and evaluates individual sources, while a literature review synthesises and connects multiple sources to provide a cohesive analysis of the research on a topic. Because I chose to create an annotated bibliography, I had a whole compilation of papers/books reviewed and summarised in my Notion database by the time I started writing my literature review. This is why writing my entire literature review chapter (18,000 words) only took me two weeks. It also allowed me to be more flexible in general in terms of the literature I was reading and the direction I was taking my research in which was great! I guess in general creating an annotated bibliography also makes you less ‘outcome-focused’ in terms of ‘jumping to the point of engaging with literature’.
