The videos we’ve seen on our feeds over the last year of Black women in labor being ignored, dismissed, or left without timely care are painful to watch. They reflect a pattern of preventable harm shaped by medical bias and misogynoir. Just as troubling is how often the response is blame, with the same myths resurfacing in comment sections, reinforcing the conditions that put Black birthing people at risk. We need to do better to raise our collective understanding so that we can all advocate for safer pregnancies and births. It’s Black Maternal Health Week, founded by Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and this year’s theme, “Rooted in Justice & Joy,” marks ten years of movement-building led by Black-led maternal health organizations. This week is a call to pay attention, to learn, and to act. To listen to Black people, support Black-led organizations, and advocate for care that is safe, respectful, and accountable.
