Happy birthday to Hattie McDaniel, the first Black actress to win an Academy Award. The actress, singer-songwriter & comedian won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939) even though she wasn’t able to attend the premier at a whites only theater or sit at the front of the room at the Oscars ceremony.
