In 2017, geologist Dr. Jessica Watkins was recruited as the only Black person + youngest member of NASA’s astronaut training program. As of last year, she is the first Black woman to join NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) crew. In April, she’ll be amongst the team that heads out on the 6 month long mission.
