Fannie Lou Hamer was born and raised in Mississippi as the 20th child of sharecroppers. Along with several successful mobilizations to get Black folks registered to vote, she co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), became a member of Mississippi’s first integrated delegation, helped to found the National Women’s Political Caucus, and single handedly ensured that 200 units of low income housing were built in Ruleville, MS.
