Nannie Helen Burroughs was born on May 2, 1879, in rural Orange, Virginia. Her parents were formally enslaved, and shortly after her father's death, Nannie and her mother moved to Washington, D.C., where she spent the majority of her childhood. She was an educator, religious leader, and social activist who helped found the Women's Auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention. Nannie went on to later found National Training School for Women and Girls in 1909. #ARyexBHM
