Did you know that Haiti is the first western Black independent nation? The rebellion was sparked by Dutty Boukman and led by Toussaint L’Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1791. After the 13 year rebellion, the enslaved overthrew the French regime thus creating the nation of Haiti in 1804. Many revolts occurred in the Caribbean including countries like Jamaica, by Queen Nanny of the Maroons, Sam Sharpe, Paul Bogle, Bussa’s rebellion in Barbados, and Fedon’s rebellion in Grenada.
