If you attended an American elementary school, then you are well aware of the lack of diversity with regard to literature. Most classic American novels that are taught in schools reflect the identities of predominantly white individuals. Seeking better representation, then-11-year-old Marley Dias devised the #1000BlackGirlBooks project. 1000 Black Girl Books originally aimed to collect and share 1,000 black female-led novels to libraries throughout the country. As of January, Marley has smashed that goal with nearly 10,000 collected books that highlight a black girl protagonist. Recently, Miss Dias authored her own book, “Marley Dias Gets It Done; And So Can You!”. Marley is rewriting the rules and centering inclusion for girls like herself!
