In 1967, Gaines led the Rams to a historic win against Missouri State , becoming the first HBCU in the nation, to win an NCAA national championship. —He developed leaders, mentored legends, and helped put HBCU athletics on the map during a time when Black programs weren’t given the recognition they deserved.
