šAs the longtime head coach at Winston-Salem State, he built a legacy that went far beyond wins. In 1967, Gaines led the Rams to a historic win against Missouri State , becoming the first HBCU in the nation, to win an NCAA national championship.
āHe developed leaders, mentored legends, and helped put HBCU athletics on the map during a time when Black programs werenāt given the recognition they deserved.
With over 800 career wins and decades of influence, Big House didnāt just coach the game⦠he changed it.
