A new Canadian study conducted by H&R Block suggests many customers have reached their tipping point, with 67% saying they’re ready to get rid of tipping altogether.
What used to be a simple way to reward great service has now expanded into everyday transactions, from coffee shops to self-serve counters, leaving many feeling pressured to tip even for basic service.
Here in Ottawa, residents are speaking out, saying tipping has gone too far. Many say they feel awkward skipping the prompt, while others admit they’ve started avoiding businesses altogether because of it.
The study also found that nearly 90% of Canadians believe suggested tip amounts are too high, especially as options now commonly start at 18 to 20 percent.
At the same time, some business owners warn that removing tipping could lead to higher prices, as restaurants and service workers rely on those extra earnings. ...
