Happy #NationalPoetryMonth! ✍️ 📖 To celebrate, we’re spotlighting Harriet Monroe, founder of Poetry Magazine, poetryfoundation! A lifelong Chicagoan and poet, Harriet Monroe ushered America into a new era of poetry when she founded Poetry Magazine in 1912! Harriet was constantly in the Fine Arts Building as a member of several clubs, including the Little Room, befriending the many creatives of the building. When she had the idea of a magazine dedicated to poetry, she turned to FAB tenants for help. Novelist Hobart Chatfield-Taylor gave her ideas for funding, and author and publisher Ralph Fletcher Seymour printed and published the magazine for its first four years. Harriet’s “Open Door” policy was revolutionary for the genre. Poetry Magazine was devoted to printing the best contemporary poetry, of any style, genre, or approach.
