On April 10, 1800, USS President slid into the water in New York, becoming one of the six original frigates of the United States Navy and a sister ship to USS Constitution. Designed by Joshua Humphreys, USS President was built to be larger, faster, and more heavily armed than many frigates of her era. Throughout her service, she protected American interests at sea during the Quasi War with France, the Barbary Wars, and the War of 1812. USS President became especially known for her speed and fighting ability, earning victories against enemy merchant ships and Royal Navy vessels. In January 1815, after a fierce battle with British ships, President was captured by the British, bringing an end to her service under the American flag.
