Every two minutes, a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth — most of them preventable with timely, quality care. Conflict and instability are making pregnancy even more dangerous. Nearly two-thirds of maternal deaths worldwide occur in countries affected by war or fragility, warns the World Health Organization (WHO). Investing in maternal, newborn and child health is a global imperative. Yet decades of progress are at risk due to humanitarian crises and funding shortfalls.
